Dermaplaning is a non-abrasive exfoliating treatment that consists of using a 10-gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the epidermis (top layer of skin) of dead skin cells and of fine vellus hair otherwise referred to as “peach fuzz”.
Your medical aesthetician will hold your skin taught and use light strokes with the scalpel to reveal a smoother and brighter complexion. Dermaplaning, combined with skincare products that you use in your daily regimen will help penetrate deeper into the skin.. Although the vellus hair on your face may not impact visual appearance, it does trap dirt and oil, which can build up over time and cause your skin to take on a dull appearance.
Many patients have concerns that scraping off the vellus hair may cause that hair to grow back darker and thicker, but this is not the case. Vellus hair is different from terminal hair. Terminal hairs are thick, long and dark. During puberty, increases in androgenic hormone levels cause vellus hair to be replaced with terminal hair in specific parts on the human body.
Women’s vellus facial hair is not replaced by terminal hair during puberty. Therefore, the vellus hair scraped away on your face during dermaplaning will grow back with the same color and texture it was prior to treatment.

Treatment & Results

Your medical aesthetician may recommend that you have dermaplaning prior to other medical grade skincare treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments or microdermabrasion. Dermaplaning can help significantly enhance the results of these treatments. Therefore, dermaplaning can be used either as a solo skincare treatment or in conjunction with other treatments. Dermaplaning is used to help address rough or dry skin, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and even mild acne scarring. Certain patients also use dermaplaning solely for the removal of vellus hair. This allows skincare products and makeup to be applied much more effectively, and with smoother results.

Dermaplaning does not cause any irritation or redness and therefore does not require any downtime. Patients receiving dermaplaning can immediately resume their daily activities.

Post Care

We highly recommend against using any harsh exfoliants for 48 hours post-treatment and encourage you to apply daily sun protection with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
